New Video: From Wrongs to Rights

In April of 1973, parents from the Allegheny County ARC discovered that the Polk State School and Hospital used cages to modify the behavior of its residents. The discovery activated parents; the Polk’s Superintendent was fired, the cages were destroyed, and thousands of people with disabilities were returned to their rightful place in the community.

On November 12th, the United Way of Allegheny County and the Heinz History Center remembered these events with an exhibition of artifacts from Polk, and a series of panel discussions with many of the parents and advocates who fought for change in the western part of Pennsylvania.
